Disclaimer: If I owned Naruto, he wouldn’t say “Believe it!” He’d say “Your mom” or something equally stupid.
This is a fluff chapter with little humor in it because even ninjas have their insecurities. The chapter is also shorter than what I’ve been writing recently, but it still came out the way I wanted so I’m satisfied. Next chapter will be longer.

Kisame ignored the chill of the wind as it blew against his bare arms. He regretted not wearing more weather-appropriate clothing but he didn’t know that he would’ve had to spend the night outside when he had gotten dressed in the morning. Leave it to Yoshizaki to spring random missions on him without any prior warning.
Kisame sighed and scooted closer to the campfire, taking comfort in the little warmth it provided him. Still, Kisame tried to not let the cold bother him too much; it was his shift to keep watch and make sure enemy ninjas didn’t attack the team in their sleep. Kisame thought it was a stupid idea because the risk of running into any enemies was extremely low; after all, the mission was simply to escort an average civilian back to his home in Konoha. Still, Yoshizaki had stressed the importance of being prepared for anything and had assigned Kisame, Takei, and you shifts to keep watch while the others slept.
Of course, Yoshizaki didn’t assign a shift for himself and got to sleep through the entire night. His excuse was that he, being a jounin, had trained himself to wake up if an enemy came within the campsite and that the genin needed to practice for future missions anyway.
Kisame glared at Yoshizaki’s still body as it lay sprawled out on his bedroll. The shark-like youth had the sneaking suspicion that his sensei was awake anyway but pushed that thought to the back of his mind in favor of keeping himself alert for the off chance that he was attacked.
Kisame’s hand twitched when he heard a rustling noise behind him but relaxed once he realized it was just you getting out of your bedroll. With your blanket wrapped around your shoulders, you slowly walked over to Kisame and sat by his side in front of the fire.
“You should go back to sleep” Kisame muttered absentmindedly, staring into the fire with an intense gaze.
“Can’t sleep” was your simple response.
Kisame nodded his head and didn’t press the subject any further. If you wanted to talk about it then you would. Besides, he didn’t really care why you couldn’t sleep. All that mattered was that you were awake now and could provide him with a little company through the night.
Even monsters can feel a little lonely, Kisame admitted to himself.
“Kisa-kun?” Kisame grunted to let you know that he had heard you. “It’s kind of scary, isn’t it?” you questioned aloud, wrapping your blanket around you a little tighter before continuing. “I mean, we just barely became ninjas and started going on missions and now we’re already on our first C-rank mission. And it’s only gonna get harder from here on. Soon we’ll go on even harder missions; life-threatening missions…” you trailed off slowly.
Kisame finally turned towards you; you were staring straight into the fire, the flames reflected in your eyes, dancing about frantically. Upon further inspection, Kisame noticed that your hands were trembling.
“One part of me is excited to be given the chance to protect our village, to do what I can to defend Kiri and all the people that live in it. I’m proud to be a ninja of our village, and yet…”
You trailed off again, trying to find the right words to say and the courage to speak them out loud. You took in a deep breath then turned towards Kisame, making eye-contact with the boy and keeping his eyes locked on you with your own gaze.
“I’m afraid” you admitted in a quiet voice, your breath sounding shaky and uneven. “We’re just kids, Kisame; we’re just kids but we’re being treated as warriors. I don’t want to die.” Your hands clenched painfully, holding your blanket tightly against your body. “During our exams to become genin, when I saw the body of the boy I killed lying on the ground and bereft of life, all I could think was that could’ve been me. I didn’t even feel guilty when I killed him; I just didn’t want to die. I still don’t want to die and I don’t want you to die, or Taki-kun, or Yoshizaki-sensei.” You blinked back the tears that started to cloud your vision before continuing. “I just want us all to live.”
Kisame blinked. He never imagined that a happy-go-lucky girl like you could ever have such insecurities. He closed his eyes, letting out a short, nervous laugh. You really were too soft to be a ninja, he thought to himself.
“No one in our team is going to die as long as I’m around and I’m not gonna die any time soon. Believe me, people have tried and failed.” You frowned at this but Kisame continued. “I’ll protect you, so stop worrying about it” Kisame mumbled, turning away from your face and back towards the fire so you wouldn’t notice the small blush coloring his cheeks.
You blinked up at him then turned back towards the fire. The corners of your lips were curved up into a small smile. “Thank you, Kisa-kun.”
Kisame grunted in response, keeping his mouth shut so he wouldn’t run the risk of saying something corny that he would regret later. His blush had darkened at your words and darkened even further when your hand reached out and gently gripped his.
“Brrrrrr! Kisa-kun, your hands are freezing!” you shouted. Kisame briefly wondered how Takei, Yoshizaki, and their client could sleep through all the noise you were making. “Your whole body feels like ice” you stated, your voice quiet again, as you grabbed hold of his arms and rubbed your hands up and down, creating friction from the movement to give Kisame some warmth.
“S-stop that” he muttered, flushed as he halfheartedly tried to push you away from him. His attempts were unsuccessful and Kisame blamed it on the cold and a lack of sleep.
“You butt-munch. What kind of idiot dresses like that when it’s cold out, huh?” Kisame opened up his mouth to retaliate, but stopped when you leaned against him, draping your blanket over the two of you. You pressed yourself firmly against him, resisting the urge to pull away from his frozen limbs. “Now just stay quiet and let me help keep you warm” you ordered half-jokingly, a grin on your face as you leaned your head against his shoulder.
For some reason, Kisame couldn’t bring himself to push you away from him.
For some reason, he didn’t want to.
